Formed in 1991 initially as a sole practitioner trading as J Murphy Law Costs Draftsman. The company structure changed to Murphy and Murphy Law Costs Consultants Limited trading as J Murphy Costs Lawyers.

In 2000, the firm moved from Harlow to the City of London, initially in Minories and thereafter in Eastcheap, both in EC3. The firm returned to Harlow, Essex, in January 2011.
